INTERNATIONAL PATIENT GUIDE

Lung cancer treatment options and care in China

A practical path from confirming the diagnosis to understanding treatment choices, checking source-verified medical resources in China and contacting an official international patient service.

START

Where should I start based on my situation?

Choose the closest situation. This does not diagnose you; it points to the information and records to review next.

YOUR STARTING PATH

Confirm the diagnosis before comparing treatment

  1. Obtain the exact pathology subtype.
  2. Confirm stage and sites of spread.
  3. Ask whether molecular and PD-L1 testing is appropriate.
Go to the relevant section
01

What should be confirmed after diagnosis?

Treatment decisions cannot be made from the words “lung cancer” alone.

Pathology

Confirm non-small cell versus small cell lung cancer and the specific histologic subtype.

Stage and spread

Review chest and whole-body imaging, brain imaging when indicated, lymph-node assessment and symptoms.

Biomarkers

For appropriate non-small cell lung cancers, discuss molecular testing and PD-L1 with the treating team.

Fitness and priorities

Organ function, other illnesses, daily function, previous treatment and personal goals affect the available choices.

02

Main treatment options worldwide

The right sequence depends on subtype, stage, biomarkers, symptoms and previous treatment.

Surgery

For selected localized disease after staging and an assessment of whether surgery is safe and likely to help.

Radiation therapy

May be used with curative, postoperative, symptom-control or metastasis-directed intent.

Chemotherapy

Used in several stages of non-small cell and small cell lung cancer, alone or with other treatments.

Targeted therapy

Requires a relevant molecular alteration and a treatment appropriate to the stage and local approval status.

Immunotherapy

Selection can depend on histology, biomarkers, stage, previous treatment and contraindications.

Clinical trials

May study new drugs, combinations, procedures or treatment sequences. Listing does not mean eligibility.

Important: A new drug or technology is not automatically better for every patient. Ask what evidence applies to your exact diagnosis, what alternatives exist, and how side effects will be managed.

03

When might a patient consider care in China?

China should be considered as one option to compare—not as an automatic replacement for safe local treatment.

Questions worth comparing

  • Is the required medicine or technology approved and actually available?
  • Does the hospital have an official disease-specific department or program?
  • Can the hospital review records before travel?
  • What care must continue after returning home?

Do not delay local care when

  • There is breathing difficulty, major bleeding, severe infection or another emergency.
  • The treating team says treatment has a narrow safe starting window.
  • Travel would interrupt oxygen, anticoagulation, pain control or other essential support.
03A

Should I seek advice, travel to China, or stay with local care?

Use these four outcomes to decide the safest next action. An overseas option must not interrupt effective or urgent care near home.

Worth requesting an opinion

Your diagnosis, stage or biomarker result is uncertain; treatment choices differ; or you need a second review before a major decision. Start with remote record review where available.

Travel may be reasonable

A China hospital has reviewed your records, identified a specific service that may fit, confirmed current acceptance and explained timing, costs and follow-up.

Prioritise local treatment

Safe evidence-based care is available locally, travel would delay treatment, or the overseas hospital has not confirmed a meaningful additional option. A remote opinion may still help.

Do not delay

Breathing difficulty, major bleeding, severe infection, confusion, uncontrolled pain or rapid deterioration requires urgent local medical care. Do not wait for an overseas reply.

Prepare before asking for a second opinion

A complete, dated record package helps a hospital understand the question and identify missing information.

  1. Pathology report and, when available, pathology slides or tissue-block information
  2. CT, PET-CT, brain MRI and other imaging reports, plus image files in DICOM format
  3. Stage, molecular and biomarker reports, including the original laboratory report
  4. A dated treatment summary: operations, radiotherapy, medicines, doses, response and adverse effects
  5. Current medicines, allergies, major illnesses, recent blood tests and organ-function results
07

Before travelling to China: complete these checks

Do not buy tickets or interrupt local treatment until the receiving hospital confirms the next step through an official channel.

1. Record pre-review

Ask whether the hospital accepts pathology, imaging and treatment records before travel, which file formats it accepts, and whether secure upload is available.

Open the record checklist
2. Medical response

Ask what question the hospital can answer remotely, who reviews the case, whether an in-person reassessment is required, and when to follow up if no reply arrives.

3. Cost and payment

Request the consultation fee, likely assessment costs, deposit rules, accepted payment methods and what is excluded. A preliminary range is not a treatment guarantee.

4. Visa and travel timing

Confirm required invitation or appointment documents with the hospital and current visa rules with official authorities. Do not delay urgent local treatment for travel paperwork.

5. Language and caregiver support

Confirm the language used for consent, interpretation availability, caregiver requirements and whether translated records need certification.

6. Care after returning home

Ask for a discharge summary, medicine list, monitoring schedule, emergency warning signs and a plan that can be shared with the treating team at home.
